JibberJobber Features in Job Searching with Social Media for Dummies (again)

JibberJobber Features in Job Searching with Social Media for Dummies (again) I got the 2nd Edition of Job Searching with Social Media for Dummies.  JibberJobber moved from page 34 to page 31!  Woot! Actually, that is coincidental, not by merit.  But here is what Joshua Waldman says: My friend and mentor Jason Alba started JibberJobber.com in 2006 and can claim development of the first online job-search platforms. By far, JibberJobber offers jobseekers the most comprehensive set of tools for managing relationships, job searches, and careers. Isnt that cool?  I like the first, By far, the most comprehensive those have a nice ring to them In the first edition, Joshua listed JobKatch.com and becomed.com in the list of tools to organize your job search.  Those are both out of business.  Of the others that are listed in the second edition, Im guessing that three wont be around in a year or two. Well be here, though You can check out Joshuas book here. Kindle version here. 5 Habits That Recruiters Need to Break

5 Habits That Recruiters Need to Break When youre doing a job day in day out, its easy to fall into habits. However, in an ever evolving industry such as recruitment, old habits could lead to you missing out on the best talent. As new technology is introduced, employer needs change and job expectations differ between generations, it is important that recruiters adapt with the industry and get in tune with what both employers and candidates are looking for. For a recruiter to put them self in the best position for nabbing the top candidates, here are a few habits they need to break. 1) Not keeping up with technology New technology and social networks open doors to so many new ways to source and attract talent, however many recruiters limit themselves to LinkedIn because thats what they know. By failing to adjust to changes in technology and making use of new tools, recruiters may miss out on great candidates, particularly millennials, who tend to be early adopters of new tech. In order to stay on the ball, recruiters must be tech savvy! 2) Not familiarising themselves with the industry If you dont understand the industry or the role that you are hiring for, then you will probably find it difficult to identify the most suitable candidate, as you wont know what to look for. Before beginning your work on a job, it is important that as the recruiter, you have had a thorough conversation with the hiring manager and have done  the necessary research in order to accurately grasp the requirements and responsibilities of the role. 3) Generic job ads By posting  vague job descriptions that fail to go into the details  of the role, then you should be ready to sift through a mountain of resumes from people who are completely unqualified for the job. Be specific about what kind of individual you are looking for and what the role entails, so people can make a more informed decision about their suitability for the role before applying. Posting the name of the company the job is also makes a big difference, as people are much more focused on company culture and reputation these days, than the job alone. 4) Poor communication Poor communication is one of the biggest offences you can make as a recruiter. The clients and the candidates expect to receive the relevant information throughout the hiring process, so if they fail to do so they are likely the become impatient and maybe even pull out. In order for everything to run smoothly it is essential that the recruiter is open and honest and keeps both parties updated throughout each stage. 5) Not picking up the phone Recruiters rely so heavily on the internet and technology  these days that they often neglect the phone. Although social media is a great tool for sourcing candidates  and the efficiency of emailing is undeniable, picking up the phone from time to time is much more effective for establishing a rapport with your candidates and clients. It can also help to speed things up significantly, as people have a tendency to put off replying to emails and a phone call can provide you with immediate answers, granted the other person picks up! 4 Ways to Successfully Recruit Tech Talent

4 Ways to Successfully Recruit Tech Talent The world of recruitment and HR often moves a little slow, but this isn’t the case for tech recruitment. Technology is one of the hottest sectors in the economy, with thousands of developer jobs up for grabs, and demand once again far outstripping supply. As a result, the tech recruitment sector will have to face up to some important changes and challenges over the coming twelve months to keep pace with demand. The problem is identifying which trends are fads, and which are here for real. Stack Overflow is the world’s largest most trusted developer resource, and with that being said, I like to think I know a thing or two about what this community care about when it comes to job search. Here are the top four ways that I believe tech recruitment will change in 2018. 1. Shorter interviews Anyone who recruits developers for a living will know first hand that they don’t take much of an interest in the job-searching process. According to a recent study by Robert Half, two-thirds of developers will lose interest in a job opportunity if they haven’t heard back within two weeks of applying, which really goes to show how impatient developers are to get the process moving. This viewpoint is backed up by those at the top: CIO.com found that 41% of CIOs agree that their interview processes were too long. It’s therefore highly important for recruiters and HR managers to open dialogue with those in charge of setting the interview process. Go armed with the evidence you need to showcase that shorter interview processes are the way that the market is heading. Long, drawn-out interview stages will put businesses at a competitive disadvantage in an environment that is very much tilted in favor of job seekers. 2. Salary negotiations: so last season? We’re used to thinking of the salary negotiation as an essential part of closing the deal, but what if that’s changing? It certainly is in the developer world. It’s becoming increasingly common to publish expected salary ranges alongside job ads, and this practice is encouraged by companies such as Stack Overflow, which has seen job ads which include salary get 60-75% more clicks. Salary calculators and companies like Glassdoor are becoming increasingly widespread, and this all means that companies and the recruiters they employ will have to adapt to this new way of working. With salary estimates commonly available, there will be much less wiggle-room to negotiate salary, potentially making new hires more expensive, but also making it easier to estimate the cost of hiring in advance. Ultimately disclosing salary estimates is a great way of building up good faith among applicants, and is recommended. 3. Treating ‘financial anxiety’ This one may be surprising: developers and technical hires such as data scientists are very well paid indeed, thanks to their high demand and relative scarcity on the job market. But that doesn’t make them immune to the same worries that the rest of us face when it comes to money. MarketWatch recently reported that more than a quarter of millennials say that financial stress affects their job performance. In addition to paying employees fairly for their work, businesses in 2018 will increasingly look to offering other financial incentives unlinked to salary to help make themselves stand out from the crowd. This could be anything from subsidized gym membership to an annual bonus. The important thing is that whatever is on offer, it’s prominently placed in the job ad. 4. Remote working Remote working is hardly new, but it’s become incredibly popular over the past few years, particularly in the tech sector. According to the  Stack Overflow 2017 Developer Survey, up to 25% of developers in Russia work remotely, while in the UK and US that figure is around 10-15%. With video conferencing and tools like Trello and JIRA, it’s easier than ever for teams of remote workers to come together and work on projects effectively. But what does this mean for recruiters and HR managers? It’s really important to be aware of the general ins and outs of remote working positions, and how that can affect what companies look for in candidates. Remote workers need to have more sophisticated communication skills to counteract not being in the office full time. It’s also easy to get demotivated when you’re not surrounded by colleagues all working on the same project, so look for healthy levels of energy and enthusiasm in candidates for remote working positions. Successful recruiters and HR managers establish meaningful relationships with their clients. Really think about your offering in these four areas remote working, salary expectation, financial anxiety and shorter interviews and you’ll be well prepared for whatever this year has to offer you. How to Find a Job With 30 Days of Connecting Days 11-15

How to Find a Job With 30 Days of Connecting Days 11-15 Happy Friday!  Today we are continuing our 30 days of connecting challenge!  If you missed Days 1-5  and Days 6-10. The more you can get into the habit of taking opportunities and preparing to network, the easier it will become. You never know what possibilities, relationships and opportunities are waiting for you unless you go actively find them. One of the things that I have gained since starting the 4 X 4 Networking Challenge  is confidence and clear direction.  In the beginning, I had to write out all the questions I wanted to ask. I rehearsed my elevator speech five times before each informational interview.  I am now more confident when speaking to people I don’t know and am immediately ready to go when they call me.  By talking with others in different fields about my future goals and dreams, my career path has become crystal clear and I now know exactly the steps I need to take. Ready for some confidence and clear direction as well?  Here are days 11-15 of the 30 days of connecting challenge!! Day 11: Research professional organizations and sign up for one this month.   If you cant think of 4 people that you dont know to meet with this month, do some research online to find the best professional organization in your area for your industry.   Go to a meeting this month and find someone at the meeting that you enjoy talking to.    Follow up with this person and do an informational interview after  the event.   (P.S. Many organizations have discounts for new members and students, make sure you check into it!) Day 12: Go out to lunch with a co-worker you  dont really  know very well.   Never forget the people that are right in front of you every day!   Sometimes we get so busy  with our work that we  dont have time  to make great relationships with the people we spend 40+ hours a week with!   Ask a co-worker to lunch and learn more about them. Day 13: Call a family member you haven’t spoken to in awhile.   When was the last time that you spoke to your great  Aunt Gladys or your Grandpa Harry? Day 14: Follow companies you are interested in on  Linkedin and see how you are connected with employees.   Find your favorite companies and stay connected!   You may notice that you Linkedin network includes people who work at your favorite company.   Email them and ask them for an informational interview. Day 15: Update your Linkedin page and ask others for recommendations.   Do some work today to clean up your linkedin profile.   Add a professional photo and  ask people that you trust to write a recommendation for you.   But, whatever you do, dont keep asking them if they are going to write it for you.   You want them to spend enough time on it to make it great.   If they dont write it, it might be their way of saying that they dont really want to write one for you.   Instead, find people who want to help you succeed! When you reach an obstacle, turn it into an opportunity. You have the choice. You can overcome and be a winner, or you can allow it to overcome you and be a loser. The choice is yours and yours alone. Refuse to throw in the towel. Go that extra mile that failures refuse to travel. It is far better to be exhausted from success than to be rested from failure. Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics “Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.” -Anais Nin Please share in the comments if you are trying 30 days of connecting!  What connecting tips do you have?
